The name is in Sanskrit which translates to 'Abode of clouds'. It is bordered on the northern and eastern end by Assam and the southern end by Bangladesh. The Brahmaputra borders the state on the Southern end. Shillong

The Capital City of Meghalaya is also known as 'Scotland of the East'. The town has everything in it from beautiful locations to adventure activity options and heritage locations which makes it a must visit place in Meghalaya. The sightseeing tour here cannot be complete without visiting any of these beautiful attractions like the famous Don Bosco Museum, Lady Hydari Park, Shillong Peak, Museum Of Entomology, Golf Links, Waterfalls, And Ward’S Lake, St Cathedral Church, Shillong peak, Elephanta Falls.

Cherapunjee

Travel to Cherapunjee which holds a record for being the place which gets the Maximum Amount of Rainfall in the World. The way to Cherrapunji is also very scenic and has many waterfalls in it like the popular Nohsngithiang falls.

Mawsynram

It is a scenic village about 65 kilometres from Shillong. It is quite famous due to its huge Stalagmite creation and is shaped like a Shivlinga which is also commonly known as 'Mawjymbuin'. It is one of the wettest places in the world and one of the places inside India which receives about 11870 mm of rainfall annually.

Jakrem

It is located about 64 km from Shillong on the Shillong-Mawkyrwat road. It is really famous for hot sulphur water springs which are believed to have magical curative & medicinal properties. People from nearby regions come here to take a dip in the hot medicinal spring. Bathing compartments are also available for the visitors here.

Jowai

It is the headquarters of the district of West Jaintia Hills in the beautiful of Meghalaya and is also home to the Pnar tribe. It is a scenic spot located on a plateau surrounded by the Myntdu river and is bordered by Bangladesh on the south side.


How to Reach

By Air : The state has an Airport at Umroi which is 30 km from Shillong, but connectivity is limited, but helicopter services are operated from Guwahati and Tura for Shillong. However, Guwahati Airport is convenient to reach Shillong.

By Rail : The state has no railway station. Guwahati is the closest railway station.

By Road : The state has a good Road Network which encompasses the state conveniently. NH 40 connects the state with Guwahati and other cities of the country.
